“Can’t Be Evil” is a far better strategy than “Don’t Be Evil.”
Esteban Ordano is a software engineer with an impressive resume of contributions to the blockchain ecosystem. He’s made waves as one of the Co-Founders and technical mastermind behind Decentraland, making it possible for users worldwide to experience owning and running their own virtual world. Before that, he worked on open source infrastructure projects at BitPay, and advised Polygon’s Matic Network and The Graph Protocol from Google – touting nearly a decade in this innovative tech space!
Biography
With a background in engineering from the prestigious Instituto Tecnologico de Buenos Aires and cutting-edge experience at Google, Ordano was already equipped with valuable skills when he encountered Ari Meilich. A neuroscience & economics student at NYU who used Bitcoin to operate his own business, Meilich felt empowered by blockchain technology’s potential for greater freedom– leading him down the path to Voltaire – ‘hacker house’ of Buenos Aires – where their partnership as co-founders started taking shape. Their shared vision soon materialised into Decentraland they know today.
An innovator at heart, Ordano began his career in 2010 as a Project Manager and Technical Leader for Monits—a software creator of mobile technologies and platforms. His thirst for learning never ceased; he was also a teaching assistant studying ITBA until 2014. That year marked the start of an invaluable journey into blockchain technology when he joined BitPay—a company renowned in cryptocurrency payment services specialising mainly with Bitcoin-as their Software Engineer working on open source projects such ‘Bitcore’ and ‘Copay Bitcoin Wallet’. To further pursue this passion, 2016 saw him venture out by founding Smart Contract Solutions, which develops smart contracts–enabling full use cases ready to be implemented within industries that currently rely upon Blockchain Technology today.
In 2015, Ordano started its journey into the metaverse with Ari Meilich at the helm. After five years of innovation as CTO, he shifted gears to become a consultant in 2020 following his platform’s restructuring into a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO).
Decentraland
Decentraland is a revolutionary 3D world platform, providing an innovative new way to explore and play. Utilizing the Ethereum blockchain and their own MANA cryptocurrency, users can purchase virtual plots of land on this browser-based platform that opened its doors in February 2020 – all overseen by the non-profit Decentraland Foundation. With these lands come endless opportunities, from creating custom environments for you or your friends to enjoy down to crafting intricate clothing items and accessories tailored specifically towards avatars used within this otherworldly landscape!
With an ICO raising $24 million in August 2017 through the offering of more than one billion MANA tokens (priced between $0.024 – 0.04 each), their vision has become a reality- packages selling out within 35 seconds!
On December 15th, 2017 the Decentraland team made history with the ‘Terraform Event’, which saw 90,000 LAND plots auctioned off in a highly competitive environment. These non-fungible digital tokens cost 1,000 MANA and around $20 each to acquire; 40,000 of them were bundled together into themed districts designed by Decentraland community members. Following this event was the release of their Marketplace platform months later that allowed players from all over to purchase these desirable properties within Genesis City.
In the summer of 2019, the first version of ‘Decentraland World Explorer’ was released to a select group for testing. By February 2020, it opened its doors to all users and has remained one-of-a-kind since then – with support from Decentraland Foundation holding 20% (561.2 M) supply in MANA as well as funds set aside for community initiatives.
In 2021 and 2022, Decentraland saw the arrival of a wave of major brands such as Samsung, Adidas, Atari and PricewaterhouseCoopers. To further this growth in its metaverse communities, Sotheby’s held its first-ever auction within Decentraland, followed by Metaverse Fashion Week featuring household names including Dolce & Gabbana and Estée Lauder. Popular music artists Deadmau5 ad Grimes also embraced the platform, putting on virtual concerts for fans to enjoy from anywhere around the globe!
In 2022, Decentraland achieved an impressive feat with a market evaluation of $1.2 billion – displaying the power and potential of this remarkable platform.
